Many individuals and families interested in hosting an exchange student have questions about the host family approval process. ISE takes great pride in having a robust network of loving volunteer families, and this is due in no small part to our tried-and-true approval process. This process involves a series of checks that ensure our host family applicants meet not only the requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of State but also the additional requirements set by ISE. These approval steps ensure that ISE can provide the highest quality programs for all participants. To make sure the host family approval process is completed effectively, ISE relies on our local field teams as well as our Compliance Department at headquarters. They work together to carefully review each application to ensure that all hosting requirements are met and that students are placed in a safe, positive environment. We’ve outlined our approval steps below so that potential host families know what to expect. Host Family Application The first step in the approval process is successfully completing your application so that it can be reviewed by your local ISE team. Once submitted, your Area Representative and Regional Management Team will comb through your application to ensure all the necessary information is included. If there are any errors or missing information from your application, your representative will contact you. Confidential Home Visit Another important step in the approval process is the home visit. To complete this step, your representative will work with you to arrange a time that they can visit your home to verify that it meets hosting requirements. During this visit, your representative will create a report detailing the student’s living arrangements, including information regarding: Neighborhood safety Living arrangements (students are required to have a bedroom that includes an exit window and storage for their things) Overall cleanliness of the home Presence of pets in the home Availability of quiet study space Reference Check ISE also requires personal references for every host family that can attest to the family/individual’s ability to care for a student. These references will be contacted and by your local ISE team and then a reference report will be reviewed by the Compliance Department at headquarters. Criminal Background Check ISE’ Compliance Department will run a background check on all host family members who will be over the age of 18 during the time that the student is living in the home. Final Compliance Check ISE's Compliance Department will conduct a thorough review of the entire host family application to ensure it is complete, accurate, and fulfills all requirements. Each host family applicant will have a personal representative to guide them through each of the steps above so that they can be completed as quickly as possible. Interested in Getting Started?
